Microneedling Aftercare: Get The Most Out of Your Treatment

Created:

Microneedling is a popular treatment for all sorts of skin issues, from wrinkles to scars to hyperpigmentation. Part of what makes it so attractive is that it's a gentle and non-invasive procedure that can be tailored to your specific needs, making it ideal for those who are nervous about some of the more radical surgical options.

However, even though you may not be going under the knife, there is still aftercare that you need to follow in order to get the most out of your treatment. In this blog post, we'll discuss what you can expect after a microneedling procedure, and give you some tips on taking care of your skin.

What to Expect After a Microneedling Procedure

Following your microneedling procedure, you can expect to see some redness and swelling. After all, you are puncturing your skin with fine needles! This is totally normal, and will usually go away within a day or two. You may also see some bruising, but this is usually only temporary and will fade within a week or so.

You may also notice that your skin is more sensitive than usual. This is also normal and will usually subside within a few days. In the meantime, it's important to be gentle with your skin and avoid any harsh treatments.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Microneedling Treatment

Getting the procedure is only half the battle - you need to take care of your skin afterwards if you really want to maximize your results. Take a look at the following tips on taking care of your skin post-microneedling below.

Keep it Clean

Of course, you'll want to keep your skin clean following a microneedling procedure. This will help you avoid infection, which  is always a risk when you're dealing with open wounds (as small as they may be in this case!).

This means using a mild cleanser and avoiding any harsh treatments, scrubs, or exfoliants. You should also avoid wearing makeup for at least 24-72 hours.

Sun Protection

You should already be doing this anyway, but it's especially important to protect your skin from the sun after a microneedling treatment. This is because it will be more sensitive and susceptible to damage. Be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it every two hours, or as needed.

Moisturize

Another important step in taking care of your skin after microneedling is to keep it well-hydrated, as it may feel dryer than normal post-treatment. This will help to soothe any irritation and may even speed up the healing process. Be sure to use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid for best results.

Things to Avoid

There are also a few things that you'll want to avoid doing after your microneedling treatment to help prevent any irritation or damage to your skin. These include:

  • Powered cleansing brushes for at least one week
  • Saunas, steam rooms, intense exercise, or anything else that may make you sweat for at least 48 hours
  • Using harsh scrubs, exfoliants, AHAs, retinols, and vitamin C serums for around 48 hours
  • Picking at your skin (it's generally a good idea to avoid this!)
  • Makeup for 24-48 hours

If you follow these simple aftercare tips, you'll be on your way to getting the most out of your microneedling treatment!
