5 Habits That Are Aging Your Skin

Created:
January 30, 2022

Unfortunately, as we get older, we will inevitably have to deal with aging skin. It will become thinner, wrinklier, perhaps even paler over time, and there really isn’t anything you can do to stop it.

Or is there?

Well, you can’t exactly stop aging in its tracks (imagine the possibilities if you could!). However, not all hope is lost. There may be some parts of your daily routine that are causing your skin to age faster than it would naturally. Therefore, by recognizing and changing these habits, you may be able to slow down the aging process and hold onto your youthful-looking skin for a bit longer.

Check out the 5 habits that are aging your skin below, and start thinking about switching up your daily routines today.

1. Not Applying Sunscreen Daily

Sunscreen isn’t just for beach days - it’s for every day. Sun damage can absolutely cause your skin to age prematurely. It can contribute to multiple issues, such as sagging, age spots, and wrinkles.

In order to help avoid this damage, it’s recommended that you use sunscreen before going outside. It should be applied about 30 minutes before heading out the door, and reapplied every two hours. This goes for all seasons, so make sure you always have some on hand.

2. Forgetting to Moisturize

While a lot of people may remember to clean their face before bed, they may forget to moisturize afterward. Some cleaners can actually strip the natural oils off of our skin, so it’s important to replenish them after if you want to maintain that youthful glow.

Therefore, you should invest in a gentle facial moisturizer and aim to use it at least once a day. No more forgetting!

3. Eating an Unhealthy Diet

While unhealthy foods can often be delicious and convenient, they’re not great for your skin. When sugar is combined with whey protein or fat, it forms something called advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. AGEs can speed up the aging process of our skin, so it’s best to avoid foods that contain a lot of that sugar/whey protein or fat combination.

You should instead focus on consuming enough fruits and vegetables. Research shows that this may be the healthiest and safest method of maintaining youthful skin.

4. Not Getting Enough Sleep

Do you wake up exhausted every day? You’re certainly not doing any favors for your skin. Research shows that poor sleep quality is linked with increased signs of skin aging and less satisfaction with appearance.

So, this may be easier said than done, but try and get some more sleep! You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and energized - and so will your skin.

5. Smoking

As if you needed another reason to quit smoking! Smoking can contribute to a number of age-related skin issues, such as crow’s feet, uneven complexion, wrinkles around the mouth, puffiness around the eyes, and lines between the eyebrows.

Unfortunately, you can’t reverse the damage, but you can prevent it from getting worse. By quitting smoking, you’ll not only help slow down the aging process of your skin, but you’ll also be improving your health overall.
